Coaching Bio

Cody Staves began his playing career in Los Angeles, CA playing for the West Valley Wolves in the California Amateur Hockey Association (CAHA) all the way up until the 16U AAA level under current Tier 1 Jr. Canes Coach and now Owner of 4 Major USPHL teams Jocelyn Langlois. From CAHA, Cody went on to the University of Pittsburgh to play in the ACHA and completed his 4 year degree in Biological Sciences.

After leading the University to its first National Club Hockey Championship in 2013-2014 Season, Cody began his coaching career in Delmont, PA for a hockey training company called Next Level Hockey. During his tenure, this remote hockey training facility would grow to +100 members in less than a year's time, serving beginning skaters all the way up to Tier 1 hockey players in the Pittsburgh Area. Cody was then introduced to the Pens Elite Hockey Program and worked alongside current Florida Panthers Skating and Skills Coach Max Ivanov. Cody was responsible for running weekly skills and skating sessions for the clubs Tier 1 teams ages 12U-16U boys and girls teams at Consol Energy Center which is now PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

After 2 years with Next Level Hockey and the Pens Elite, Cody returned home to Los Angeles to accept a full time role as an educator teaching AP Physics Mechanics, Chemistry, and Algebra at Yeshiva University of Los Angeles. Here Cody would develop his leadership, organization, structure, and creativity in delivering a premier STEAM education to high school students. This chapter allowed Cody to hone in his ability to lead and create an environment for student enrichment in the sciences while also creating design thinkers and the next generation of leaders in science and technology. It wasn’t long before he dove back into the hockey scene coaching for the California Golden Bears Hockey Club in Burbank, California in his time away from YULA.

Cody worked 3 years for the California Bears Organization aiding in the clubs player development from 10U - 14U working in roles as a head coach, assistant coach, and a skills/ skating coach for each team in the club. During this time the club would earn Back to Back California State Titles at the Tier 2 U14 Level, and promote a large majority of these players to northeast boarding schools in the New England Prep School League.

In just his third year coaching club hockey with the California Bears, Cody was given the opportunity to Head Coach in the New England Prep School League (NEPSAC) with Vermont Academy where he would develop his career as a science educator, and a hockey coach. This opportunity fast tracked Cody to head coach at the highest level of high school hockey in the country at the age of 28 years old. Aside from on ice coaching, Cody was tasked with the responsibility to do the team’s scouting, recruiting, and placement as well as develop the current players on the roster.

Cody head coached and served as the schools Math and Science Tutor at Vermont Academy for the 2018-2019 season. The team competed against some of the top competition in the North East against schools like St. Paul’s Prep, Tilton, Cushing Academy, and Kimball Union to name a few.

At the culmination of the 2018-2019 Prep School Season with Vermont Academy, Coach Cody partnered with LA Pros Hockey to lead camps, clinics, and teams as a part of a spring hockey development program for elite youth players in the Western Region of the United States. Serving as the Director of Player Development and Head Program Coach, Cody would lead elite level hockey camps and teams of players in Vegas, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, and Toronto in June, July and August of 2019-2020. Aside from working with LA Pros, Cody also assistant coached at Loyola Marymount University ACHA Div II men’s team for the 2019-2020 season working as a defensive coach and off ice training coach.

Most recently during the pandemic of 2019-2021, Coach Cody worked alongside Coach Alex Kim, Craig Johnson, and Jeff Friesen at Optimum Hockey Academy in Irvine, California. At Optimum Hockey Academy, Coach Cody ran power skating and skills for the Academy and for the High Performance Group spanning Jr. Ducks club players from 10UA to 16 UAAA.

Cody has accepted a role for the 2021-2022 season as the head coach for the Accelerator School Hockey Academy, the 10U-AA youth Jr. Canes team, and home school hockey camps.

Coaching Mindset Quote

“The evolution of a coach is a process for any coach that enters the profession. It is a career that more often than not you fail, and so picking yourself up and dusting yourself off is a mindset you have to have to stay in this business for the long haul." - Head Coach Mike Sullivan, Pittsburgh Penguins 2x Stanley Cup Champion Coach
